NIH Mind and Body Week

September 8–11, Bethesda Campus, MD
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will hold its second annual Yoga Week. Highlighting the science and practice of yoga, this four-day series of events will serve NIH employees and the public. Participants will not only learn about the benefits of yoga but also experience them first-hand through practice.  The first yoga week, in May 2008, drew national attention with over 1,300 participants - it also resulted in National Yoga Month, a National Health Observance being designated for every September from now until — perhaps eternity.

This Yoga Week will focus on yoga, yoga therapy, and yoga research, and will have other related presentations on meditation, stress management, and other mind/body modalities.  Everyone is welcome to join us for the free sessions. There will also be an opportunity to gain Continuing Education credits through Yoga Alliance and several other health education partners.  Events take place in Bethesda, Maryland, which is just 20 minutes away from Washington, DC. Come be a part of this historic and energizing event. For more information, contact Dr. Rachel Permuth-Levine at levinerac@mail.nih.gov.

Part of National Yoga Month. Check out the Facebook page for updates, a full list of speakers and activities.

Thursday, Sptember 10, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
$55 / Enroll
Please join physician/yogi Timothy McCall for an overview of yoga therapy as practiced in different traditions in both the United States and India. We’ll discuss the principles of yoga therapy, the science behind it, how to integrate yoga into both conventional and alternative health care, and try out a few practices from asana to breathing to meditation. They’ll be time for questions and answers, so come prepared. Timothy McCall, M.D., is a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and a dedicated yoga practitioner who has traveled to India and throughout the United States observing, training with, and interviewing the world’s leading yoga teachers and therapists. He is the medical editor of Yoga Journal, and the author of Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (Bantam, 2007).

Praise for Yoga as Medicine: "This is a landmark book. Yoga as Medicine provides a remarkable perspective on the breadth and depth of Yoga therapy, and many leading practitioners, both in the West and India, in a uniquely educational, engaging, and inspiring way." John Kepner, Executive Director, International Association of Yoga Therapists. "If you care about your body and want to learn to listen more carefully to its messages, and to take good care of it over the long haul, you will find this book a godsend, whether you are young or old, firm or infirm, a new-comer to yoga or an old-timer. It is the first comprehensive medical look at the benefits of yoga and its therapeutic uses. Timothy McCall has done a great service to the field of mind/body medicine." Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., Professor of Medicine emeritus, University of Massachusetts Medical School, author of Wherever You Go, There You Are and Full Catastrophe Living.

"My primary objective," says Kest, "besides turning more and more people on to a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle that continually challenges them to grow, is to teach a system of exercise that fully integrates the body, mind, and spirit.
