  • How to use yoga to combat stress
  • How to help others around you de-stress and the correct practice for your body type

Perfect for all levels of students, spouses & friends that are new to yoga! This is a great intro to yoga for a beginner. The advanced student will be equally as interested in specifically targeting yoga practice to reduce stress.

The instuctor: Susan Bowen, E-RYT, has been practicing and studying yoga since the 1980s. Susan's deepest interest and study is in how to balance and heal through ;flow; energetic movement and stillness. Without awareness of flow; we can walk around frenetically or with "low energy." Yoga training gave her the tools to achieve a more balanced and peaceful life.

Yoga practitioners in 30 countries formed a "mala" (a Sanskrit word meaning "garland") around the earth, raising both funds and consciousness for some of the pressing issues facing the world as part of the Global Mala Project. Thrive Yoga was lucky to have yoga legend Beryl Bender Birch leading its "string" of mala beads with 108 sun salutations. Beryl has been teaching yoga since 1974 and is a nationally renowned author, teacher and spiritual revolutionary. In addition to Beryl, Nira Etons Berry of LaughingRX Yoga provided components to the practice.

Each Global Mala event helped raise funds for the charity organization of choice.  Thrive's donations will go to the Give Back Yoga Foundation, which expands yoga practice in underserved communities, and the Rockville Manna Food Center.

Alan Finger at NIH Yoga Week

For all those who could not attend the National Institutes of Health's Yoga Week that Thrive Yoga co-sponsored in May, the online yoga community iHanuman is serving up Yogiraj Alan Finger's keynote presentation. Both audio and video clips are available. iHunuman also offers the conference contributions of senior Iyengar Yoga teacher John Schumacher and of Dr. Timothy McCall, who wrote the book Yoga as Medicine.

Karma Yoga Program

Since our opening on Rockville Pike in 2005, Thrive Yoga has been committed to Karma Yoga, derived from the Sanskrit Kri, meaning 'to do', or action and yoga translates to union. Thus Karma yoga literally translates to the path of union through action. It is described as dutiful action without concern for rewards.

The Thrive Karma Yoga Program is sponsored by Thrive Yoga with participation from our staff, teachers and our students. It is our way to give our time and energy to the community for the good of the community.

Yoga for a Cause

Yoga for a Cause is a charitable program developed by Thrive Yoga to provide awareness and financial assistance for organizations that support our community's health, wholeness, and well-being. Thrive Yoga offers these classes for FREE, asking instead that patrons open their hearts and their wallets with a donation to the sponsored organization.

Perfect class for beginners! Door prizes and series giveaways!
