“”There’s something about physically using your hands and feet,” ( Susan) Bowen said. “There’s something about the action of being in the earth and doing it, that is a lot like what we try to create in yoga. Through movement and the experience, we actually lift our spirits. You can write a check to an organization and that’s great, but when you’re out there you have the experience of actually giving back. That’s the key thing.”

She remains glad she made the career change. “It takes a lot of courage to do it. It takes more courage to stay with it, and not go back to other world that you know.”

But she also looks for broader themes. “Our business model is dependent on people sticking it out” for the long run, she said. “Are we being true to our vision of a high-quality environment? Are we planning the programming we want to plan? Every time we go away from doing what we intended, this keeps us honest.”
